Representing Scandinavian Modernism at its best, this large and very rare linen tapestry depicting three of the performing arts — theatre, music and dance — was designed by Vicke Lindstrand and executed by Elsa Gullberg in 1944 for the opera house in Malmo, Sweden. Lindstrand designed a set of tapestries for the building, each including mythological subjects, such as the Centaurus constellation here, framed by flying birds and tall trees. Lindstrand is best known for a celebrated series of engraved pieces he designed by the renowned Orrefors glass company in Sweden in the 1930s and 40s, and then for Kosta Boda in later years. The tapestry is woven linen, and includes a row of hooks at the top to facilitate wall display.
