Lettera 22 portable typewriter, of enameled metal and plastic, designed by Marcello Nizzoli and produced by the progressive manufacturer Olivetti in Italy, circa 1954. Nizzoli (1887-1969), a painter, graphic artist, and architect was Olivetti’s Industrial Design director from the 1930s-1960s. The Lettera 22, a portable mechanical typewriter designed in 1950, earned Italy’s prestigious Compasso d’Oro in 1954 and was chosen best designed product of the last 100 years at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1959. While it came in several colors and was also produced at Olivetti plants in Scotland and Spain, the example in MoMA’s permanent design collection shares the exact features with this example color, age, and Italian production location. In truly excellent original condition, with only very minor wear consistent with age. Keys and action still work smoothly. With the original case.
