A rare and unique modernist oriental rug, distinguished by an ivory open field partially embellished by groups of three stylized fish in a rich burgundy red. The arrangement of these clusters of fish is strongly reminiscent of the design arrangement in the Art Deco rugs of Europe. Rugs of this type were sometimes commissioned by the architects responsible for building the Art Deco and modernist palaces of some of the most important maharajas of India, who were enamoured with the continental Avant Garde movements in art and design.
