Over this period Adler kept a series of important notebooks, currently in the collection of the Tate, covering his development over this tumultuous period between 1933-1949. Taking us across Europe, from Germany to the south of France, to the unfamiliar Glasgow, these notebooks provided Adler with a means to work while his itinerant existence kept him from easels and canvas, containing many pages of studies and ideas which would later be worked into finished pieces. Importantly though, Adler was able to record his thought process and the fruits of his vivid imagination, transforming and reworking the world around him from the ordered to the chaotic and the figurative to the abstract.
This particular work can be traced back to Adler’s sketchbook No. 7, page 19 held in The Tate gallery archive. Adler has reworked the image on a larger format using graphite and gouache.
